Neodymium-Iron-Boron(NdFeB magnet)

Neodymium-Iron-Boron(NdFeB) magnets are recently developed magnetic materials in1980's, with magnetic characteristics far exceeding those of the Alnico and Ceramic/Ferrite types. They are alloys of the Rare Earth group of element-neodymium. The composition is Nd2Fe14B.

How to transport permanent magnets

Permanent Magnet is a special kind of product. How the magnets are transported and what need to notice in transit? Please pay attention to two main kinds of problems during the transportation of magnets:
1. How to protect the magnets
2. How to prevent the damage produced by the magnetic field to the surrounding environment and people

Firstly, please make sure the storage environment for rare earth neodymium magnets in transportation is dry. If the humidity is high, it is easy to cause magnets rusting. Some anti rust oil can be used on the surface of the magnets or plating processing is a good way to prevent the magnet going rusting. For uncoated magnets, vacuum packing should be used to prevent corrosion.

In addition, the temperature in transit must not be too high. Generally, the neodymium permanent magnets have demagnetization problem under the temperature above 80 degrees. So please try to keep it at room temperature in transportation process. Secondly, in order to prevent damage caused by the collision between magnets in the course of carriage, it is better to use spacers or wooden board between the magnets. In transportation process, the operators should handle the magnets gently, preventing fierce knock against.

Next question is about how to solve the impact of the magnetic field to the environment. First of all, please try not to transport magnets and the items that are sensitive to magnetic field such as the computer, watch and so on together. The simplest method to shield the magnetic field of magnet is to use iron sheet around the magnets, or with carbon steel. And then please arrange the magnets to make its internal magnetism to form a good magnetic circuit. The maglev train and airplane is right choice of the means of transport. However, the transportation cost will be higher. Moreover, the requirements on magnetic shielding will be much stricter if strong permanent magnets like neodymium magnets , or SmCo rare earth magnets, or ferrite magnets are transported by air. Commonly, airlines only arrange shipment after the magnets passing the magnetism inspection.

Sintered alnico magnets produced by powder metallurgy technology. According to comprehensive introduction to alnico in Wikipedia, material composition of alnico permanent magnet includes aluminum, nickel, cobalt, copper, titanium, iron, and niobium. But not every grade of alnico rare earth magnet includes all of the aforementioned materials. For example, grade Alnico 1 is usually referred to as aluminum-nickel alloy, which means it does not contain cobalt, and grades below alnico 5 do not contain titanium. Generally, alnico magnets are iron based alloy with iron taking the largest proportion of raw material, aluminum taking less than 8%, and cobalt 38% or less.
Technological properties of sintered Alnico magnets: metal powder mixture is molded into blank with different sizes by press mold; the raw material blank will be sintered in vacuum or gas protection furnace; the alloyed blank will have heat treatment, thus magnetism is achieved. Magnets produced by the above technologic process are characterized by their simple shapes, which is mainly because the powder press molding is not suitable for complex shapes manufacturing. In addition, high dimensional precision is a main characteristic of powder press molding. Different from wire cutting technique for neodymium magnet , sintered alnico magnets are usually produced by single shot shaping technique which makes alnico magnets very suitable to be applied in high precision magnetic parts.

In daily life, austenitic stainless steel (also known as Ni stainless steel) and martensitic stainless steel (also referred to as stainless steel, but such name is not scientific, easy to misunderstand and should be avoided) are the two types of stainless steel which people are most familiar with. The reason why austenitic stainless steel is not attractable to magnets is that there is high percentage of Ni and Cr in it(Cr about 18% and Ni ≥4%), which makes the internal structure of it presents a so called austenite microstructure. The austenite structure is non-magnetic, so austenitic stainless steel cannot be attracted to any strong permanent magnets like neodymium magnets , ferrite magnets.

The austenitic microstructure of steel will lose its ferromagnetism at temperature above 770 degrees Celsius. Austenitic stainless steel with large proportion of alloy is also not ferromagnetic. Except for the austenitic steel, other types of stainless steel are ferromagnetic such as ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel and so on. Stainless steels that can be attracted by strong magnets are called Cr13, and stainless iron 1Cr18Ni9Ti and 0Cr18Ni9Ti, etc..

People often test the quality and genuineness of stainless steel using a neodymium permanent magnet . If the stainless steel is not attractive to magnets, it is thought to be qualified. Actually, such test method is not realistic. Anyone who has rich experience in producing steel material will never apply this confusing test method to verify stainless steel.

According to manufacturers of stainless steels, there is a variety of stainless steel, which can be categorized into austenitic stainless steel and martensitic stainless steel based on their structure at room temperature. Austenitic steel is no magnetic or weakly magnetic, while martensite or ferrite steel is magnetic. However, it is not necessarily the case. For an example of austenitic 304 stainless steels that are commonly used as tube plates in decoration, they are nonmagnetic, but they might appear magnetic due to fluctuations of chemical composition in melting or different processing status. So such magnetism of stainless steel is not a proof of inferior quality.

Beside, the inner structure of 304stainless steel may transform to be martensitic after cold processing. The greater the degree of cold processing, the more the martensitic transformation is, and the stronger the magnetism of the steel will be. On the contrary, the 200 series stainless steel with inferior quality might probably be non-magnetic. Therefore, verifying the quality and genuineness of stainless steel by testing its magnetism is terribly wrong.

General Introduction
